Benjamin
Banneker
It
is appropriate that students who choose a rigorous course
of study to prepare for post-secondary work will have
the opportunity to enroll in a school that is distinguished
by the name of Benjamin Banneker, noted mathematician
and astronomer.
Documentation
indicated that Banneker constructed the first wooden clock
in America, assisted the commission that surveyed the
District of Columbia, locating sites for the United States
Capitol and the White House, and produced an almanac for
the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Benjamin
Banneker was the grandson of an African slave who surmounted
overwhelming odds through self-instruction and inner motivation
to accomplish what he set out to do. In this achievement,
he serves a model for all students.
